April 7 – September 2, 2018
In collaboration with ArtsWorcester, the Worcester Art Museum presents works by James Dye, the Sally R. Bishop Prize Winner of the 2017 ArtsWorcester Biennial. A self-described visual storyteller, Dye explains, “Story is everything. You couldn't have a culture without a story.” Exploring the Myths of James Dye examines several of the literary themes that drive Dye's graphic fictions: creation stories, dystopias and alchemy. Speaking a visual language all his own, Dye creates elaborate and imaginative India ink drawings informed by common global narratives.
Trained as a printmaker, Dye turned to ink drawings after earning a BFA in 2005 from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. This exhibition capitalizes on the deliberate, print-like effect of his monochromatic drawings. Chosen in concert with the artist, the exhibition features prints from the museum's permanent collection that resonate with the formal qualities of Dye's drawings and his lifelong interest in myth.
