Loengard started freelancing for LIFE in the mid-1950s, and joined the staff in 1961. Thus it was he who was assigned to spend a day in Miami with a new band called The Beatles. When weekly publication of the magazine ceased in 1972, Loengard joined the development group at Time Inc., and two years later he became the first picture editor of People magazine. “Like doctors, photographers work with what is present,” he once said. “I suspect our chief emotions are anticipation, frustration, and patience, balanced by a marvelous sense of elation when things go right. . . .”
