John F. Kennedy, Jr., Saluting his Father's Passing Caisson, November 25, 1963

The most reproduced image of a scene that stirred the nation, this cropped image was not Stearns’s doing, but an abbreviation of a larger creation, more thoughtfully composed composition of the family honoring the President’s funeral cortege. However, the nation found solace in the dignified bravery of a child more affected than the national that shared his loss and grief. When the New York Times later credited the photographer who appropriated and cropped the picture, the ensuing controversy shifted attention from the distributing new organization to a photograph’s creator.
