Denise Marika: Unearthed

Widely considered an innovator in the field of video sculpture, Denise Marika will create the first projected (rather than painted) image for the Wall at WAM. Using a signature subject-herself, nude-she will explore the conceptual, emotional, and physical conditions that have characterized creative endeavors throughout time. Viewers will watch a projected image of a woman attempting to construct a wall in clay, a process that is constantly thwarted by an inherent process of deterioration. Incorporating real space, time, and volume, Marika's video “wall” will coexist with the actual wall in the Renaissance Court. In a juxtaposition of the present and the past, the conditions of today's artist that Marika's project explores-such as labor, isolation, vulnerability and anonymity-poetically converge with those of artists who labored on the Museum's Antioch mosaics more than 1400 years ago.

Marika has a studio in Brookline and is an adjunct faculty member in the 3D Department at the Massachusetts College of Art. She has participated in numerous one-person exhibitions at prestigious institutions including the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and MASS MoCA (North Adams).
