Terrific Tokyo: A Panorama of Prints

Explore the 60-year evolution of the modern city of Tokyo in Terrific Tokyo: A Panorama in Prints from the 1860s to the 1930s, shown at the Worcester Art Museum from April 17 through July 4, 1999.

Organized by Elizabeth de Sabato Swinton, the Worcester Art Museum's curator of Asian Art and director of Collections and Exhibitions, this stirring exhibition of 50 woodblock prints records the dramatic transformation of the city once called Edo. It examines the era when Tokyo became the economic, political, and intellectual center of the Japanese nation from the late 19th century to the rebuilding of the city after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The exhibition includes work from the Worcester Art Museum's renowned collection, as well as late 19th-century "modernization" prints from the collection of Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf.
