Henry Bosse, U.S. Steamlaunch "Louise," Near Keokuk, Iowa, 1885
I visited the MFA in early October to see Henry Bosse's U.S. Steamlaunch Louise. This is one of the cyanotypes I'm writing my catalogue essay about. That morning was the highlight of my pre-writing research. I was stoked to be able to sit with the print and actually hold the art. I could see so many incredible details within the photograph. There is something really, really special about sitting quietly with a work of art in an intimate setting. I put my theories about the emotional responses U.S. Steamlaunch Louise that evokes to the test during my hour in front of the print.
I'm working on the third draft of my catalogue essay now. The editing process has been technically and intellectually challenging. I watch my essay grow each time I rewrite it, but I'm still not satisfied with the piece I've produced. I'm happy to have another week to work on it. I'm looking forward to seeing the essay published in the catalogue! I have a few kinks to work out before I'll be ready to submit it.
